Cultural news (March 2007 - 6)

Ai-mitsu is one of the most tortured (and fascinating) Japanese painters from the middle of the last century - he died in China during the war. He is undeservedly unknown outside of Japan, so the Ai-Mitsu Exhibition starting March 30 in the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and lasting until May 27, is a good chance to get to know his work.
Also in Tokyo, the new Suntory Museum of Art in Tokyo Midtown will open its doors on March 30 with the exhibition Iwai, Arts of Celebration. I was a regular visitor to the “old” Suntory Museum in Akasaka and although the collection has not changed, I am curious to see the new building designed by Kengo Kuma!
The National Museum of Ethnology in Osaka has an interesting exhibition Pilgrimage and Sacred Sites, which explores pilgrimage around the world by means of documentary films, photos, sketches and items from the sacred sites. From Japan, the Shikoku Pilgrimage and Mr Osore are included (besides Lourdes and Santiago de Compostela). Until June 5.
